While most of us hunker down during the cold months, our bees are tucked safely inside their hives. Every now and then, Iāll see one poke its tiny head out to check on the world, a little reminder that soon enough, theyāll be back in full force. Once spring fully arrives, thousands of bees will take flight, venturing out to collect pollen and nectar to create something truly magical: honey.
This summer is extra exciting for us because weāre anticipating our first real harvest ā nearly 1,000 pounds of pure, raw honey! Itās a dream come true, not only because honey is one of natureās most perfect foods, but because my vision has always been to weave it into both our skincare formulations and into the community as a nourishing food.
The Incredible Work of Bees
Hereās a mind-blowing fact: it takes about 60,000 bees, collectively traveling up to 55,000 miles and visiting more than 2 million flowers, to produce just one pound of honey. That little jar of golden sweetness is the result of some serious teamwork and devotion. But not all honey is created equal. Processed honey (the kind you often find in the little bear-shaped bottles) loses most of its natural goodness. Itās stripped of enzymes, vitamins, and minerals like B vitamins, iron, potassium, and calcium, and whatās left is little more than sugar. By contrast, raw, unprocessed honey is brimming with nutrients, enzymes, and antioxidants that support both wellness and beauty.
Honey as Skincare
Itās no surprise that honey has been a skincare staple for thousands of years. Ancient women from Cleopatra to everyday healers used honey to soothe, nourish, and protect their skin. And hereās a fun observation: beekeepersā hands are often incredibly soft and smooth, thanks to constant contact with honey during harvest season.
Why is honey so effective for the skin?
- Itās a humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the air and locks it into your skin.
- It has antibacterial properties, making it a natural ally against breakouts.
- Itās packed with antioxidants that help protect skin against environmental stressors.
- It soothes and softens dry, rough, or inflamed skin.
Honey in Modern Medicine
Beyond beauty, honey is also making waves in the medical world. Products like Medihoney, created with Manuka honey, are being used in hospitals to treat burns and wounds. Doctors are finding that honey often supports faster healing and reduces infection risk better than many synthetic treatments.
Sans + Bees = A Natural Partnership
With thousands of bees in my backyard, this partnership feels inevitable. Nature has given us the gift of honey, and soon, weāll be sharing it through Sans Skincare in new formulations designed to hydrate, soothe, and protect. And yes, weāll also be making our raw honey available for everyday enjoyment.
