I recently attended an all-day symposium for the spa industry, an event where top names like Four Seasons, Canyon Ranch, and other luxury destinations gathered to discuss the future of spas.
This year’s theme? Health and Wellness.
The conversations revolved around the public’s growing desire for more than surface-level beauty. Today’s clients want both inner and outer wellness, a healthy body, a clear mind, and radiant skin. And the spa industry is shifting to meet those demands.
The Wellness Shift in Spas
Larger destination spas are leading the charge, offering:
- Staff trained in nutrition, exercise, yoga, and meditation.
- Facilities designed with lush grounds, serene pools, and nature-inspired environments.
- Holistic menus that blend treatments for both body and spirit.
It was clear from every speaker: this is consumer-driven. Clients are asking for more natural, wellness-oriented experiences and spas are delivering.
Or . . . are they?
The Missing Piece: What About the Products?
As I listened, one thing kept nagging at me. Presentations showed beautiful facilities, incredible treatments, and impressive wellness programs. But not once did anyone mention the actual products being used on clients’ skin.
And that’s a problem.
Most spa treatments still use products that are far from natural, filled with preservatives, fragrances, and synthetic ingredients that do not support health and wellness. Consumers are smarter now. They read labels. They want purity in what they eat, what they breathe, and what goes on their skin.
So why isn’t the spa industry talking about this?
Where Change Begins
The truth is: change is consumer-driven. And while big resorts may be slow to adopt, I’ve already noticed smaller boutique spas making the shift. Why? Because their clients ask for it.
These smaller spas build close relationships with their clients. They feel a personal responsibility to care for their skin and that means being mindful of the products they use.
I believe that as clients continue to demand it, larger spas will follow. True health and wellness can’t just be about the environment or the treatment menu, it must include the very products applied to the skin.
Because wellness isn’t complete until every part of the experience supports it.
