Toxic Ingredients in Skincare: Products to Avoid & What to Use Instead

When you pick up a lotion or body wash at the store, do you really know what’s inside it? Labels can be deceiving, filled with buzzwords like “dermatologist-tested”, “gentle”, or even “natural.” But the truth is, many popular products are still loaded with harmful chemicals that disrupt your skin’s natural balance, and sometimes even your overall health.

Here’s the quick rule of thumb I always share: If “water” is on the ingredients list, put it back.

Why? Water breeds bacteria. To stop bacteria growth, companies add preservatives. And even if it's a "natural" preservative, that preservative's main job is to kill mold, yeast, and bacteria in the jar. The problem is our skin contains on it trillions of beneficial bacteria that is also destroyed by the preservatives in the jar . . . that causes a whole new series of problems, ones that are better left to another blog post. So, if there’s water in the formula, there’s a preservative hiding in there too, often parabens, formaldehyde-releasers, or other harsh synthetics.

These products often include synthetic fragrances, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and mineral oils, ingredients that can disrupt hormones, irritate the skin, clog pores, and weaken your skin’s natural microbiome.

The Case for Plant-Based, Water-Free Skincare

The good news? You don’t have to compromise your health for beautiful skin. Choosing water-free, plant-based formulations means:

  • No need for harsh preservatives (bacteria can’t grow without water).
  • Nutrient-rich oils and butters that deeply penetrate the skin instead of sitting on top.
  • Formulas that work with your skin’s microbiome, rather than disrupt it.
  • Long-lasting, concentrated benefits without fillers or synthetics.

🗝️ Key Takeaway

Many mainstream lotions, washes, and cosmetics contain preservatives and chemicals that disrupt skin health. Always check labels carefully.
