Finding Balance: Why Hobbies Like Photography Support Wellness

 

 

Lately I’ve really been trying to keep my life in balance. Running a business is all-encompassing, it can easily become 24/7 if you let it. When I first started working for myself over 20 years ago, I wondered how I would ever have the discipline to get things done. Who knew the harder part would be learning when to stop working?

I’m lucky because I’ve always loved what I do. But I’ve discovered that no matter how much you love your job, it’s still important to have something outside of work that brings you joy. For some people, that’s sailing. Others might find it in hiking, music, or art. For me, it’s photography.


Why a Hobby Matters for Balance

Photography helps me unwind, relax, and reconnect with myself. It’s not about being perfect or professional it’s simply about enjoying the process of capturing little moments that feel meaningful.

Hobbies like photography:

  • Give your mind a creative outlet.
  • Relieve stress and improve mood.
  • Encourage mindfulness and presence.
  • Build confidence by learning and growing in something just for you.


My Creative Joy: “Photographer’s Brush” 

I’ve always loved art, design, colors, and how they work together. Pair that with my love of computers (and Photoshop!), and I found myself creating digital art from my photos. I even gave my hobby a name: Photographer’s Brush.

It’s become one of my favorite ways to relax, recharge, and feel inspired outside of work. It reminds me daily that we all need time for ourselves, something that’s just for joy, not productivity.
